Nine Tanzanian students and one from Kenya have been arrested in India for allegedly attacking three police officers and cause public nuisance.

According to the Indian national newspaper ‘The Hindu’, the students were arrested on Saturday night, for allegedly attacking police officers working at Kuvempunagar Police station in Mysore city.

It is alleged that on this particular night, police went into the building in which the students were residing for an inquiry after complaints that they were causing disturbance.

However, the students reportedly assaulted them and tore their uniform.

According to the reports, police went into the building after one of the residents from Kanakadasanagar had complained to them that the students were causing disturbance in the area after they had taken alcohol.

Seven of the students are studying at the JSS Law College and the rest at the SBRR Mahajana’s College.

On learning about the incident, a police team led by sub-inspector Prasanna Kumar rushed to the spot and took the students into custody.

Police also seized seven cars, two motorcycles and bottles of liquor.

Reached for comments yesterday evening, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Seif Idd said that his office was yet to be informed about the incident, adding: “The government can only intervene in the matter if the students are in police custody… but once they are taken to court, the law will take its course.”

He said in a telephone interview that the government will follow up the issue with the Indian government through diplomatic channels.

He warned that the government expected the students sent abroad to concentrate on studies and to behave properly.

So far, hundreds of Tanzanian students are pursuing different courses in India, whereby some of them are being sponsored by the Indian government and others under private sponsorship.
