THERE was a stand off yesterday at the ODM national executive meeting over the proposal that party leader Raila Odinga become the presidential candidate without going through the nomination process.
According to multiple sources within the meeting, Lands minister James Orengo invoked the article that would allow Raila to bypass nominations. “Orengo cited the article claiming that Raila is the leader of the party and that makes him an automatic presidential candidate for the party,” stated an MP.
Raila himself told members that candidates can be picked through direct democracy or indirect democracy where representatives go to polls. “He stated that the direct democracy can be infiltrated by non-party members,” stated the source. Cabinet Minister Fred Gumo reportedly commented that the dispute was making ODM look shaky and called on Raila and Mudavadi to hold joint delegate meetings.
