NAIROBI, Kenya — A watchdog says the Ethiopian government has detained two more journalists under anti-terror laws, bringing the total number imprisoned since June to six.
The Committee to Protect Journalists said Saturday that security forces picked up independent journalists Sileshi Hagos and Eskinder Nega this week.
Four other journalists, including Hagos’ fiancee Reeyot Alemu, have been detained under the terrorism laws.
State television called Hagos and Nega “spies for foreign forces” shortly after the two were arrested. They were remanded until Oct. 12.
Nega and his wife were imprisoned for 17 months for their critical coverage of the government repression of peaceful protests following the disputed 2005 elections.
