Public Health Minister Beth Mugo is leading a team of officials from her ministry to the Thika Level 5 hospital following the deaths of six babies over alleged suffocation.
The team is in the area to establish the cause of the mysterious deaths of the infants. Relatives claimed the deaths that occurred on Friday night were as a result of laxity by nurses.
Shock and panic gripped patients at the hospital after the six babies lost their lives from what sources say is suffocation due to lack of oxygen.
They claimed the paedriatic ward had run short of oxygen leading to the tragedy. The hospital’s administrator, Dr Jonah Mwangi, has denied that the children died as a result of negligence.
He said only four and not six as reported had died after succumbing to different illnesses.
Mothers of the dead children said it was not until the sixth child died that the nurses sprung into action, and began looking for the nurse in charge who later discovered that the cylinder available had run out of oxygen.
Those interviewed claimed seasoned nurses were leaving complicated cases to trainee nurses at the expense of patients.
