You may have been following the news and, therefore, might know about the post-election violence that has thrown Kenya, my native country, in deep turmoil. I am appealing to you in the interests of stopping what has become, at best, a civil war and may become, at worst, a genocide. I am urging you to sign the petition below.
It is the easiest thing that we can do at this point to show the people of Kenya that we support their democratic voice and to prevent those who feel disenfranchised from resorting to violence. Please take the time to read and sign this petition. I am certain that you will feel as I do–that the rule of law must be respected and that Mwai Kibaki must abdicate the presidency immediately.
Because the death toll is rising as Kenyans feel that their voices are not being heard, we must act now. Please pass on this message to as many people as you know. History has shown that, in situations like this one, inaction and a lack of awareness practically guarantee genocide but certainly ensure the massive loss of innocent life. Also, you are welcome to copy and send this petition to your elected officials wherever you reside.
As Britain’s Lord David Steel has said, “The situation in the country is potentially extremely dangerous because of the tribal rivalries in the election. The international community must make it clear they will not accept a fraudulent result.”
