“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” (1 Corinthians 9:24)
She walked in and looked surprised at the energy in the room at the Aerobics Dance group exercise. Some people were having fun dancing hard while others were dancing out of rhythm. Some danced with less energy, while a few did not even watch the coach for the right moves. She watched for few minutes then decided to join the group. Not sure about the moves, she decided to move close to the front row where she could see the coach. She noticed that those who were dancing hard were sweating and paid attention to the moves and instruction from the coach. To her surprise at the end of the song, the coach told the group that it was not how many minutes they danced that really mattered, but the intensity and strength of the movement of their whole body.
This is what really helped in shedding those extra calories. She then wondered why some people did not dance as vigorously as the others, why others walked out of the session in the first twenty minutes, while some quit half-way through. All these were members of a health club that have paid to belong. She then proceeded to the next group exercise, which was “Zumba”. This is the one that makes you think the whole world is dancing, but in reality it’s just a few people dancing. She made the same observation, but even worse that though “Zumba” is a vigorous dance that targets most parts of your body for weight loss, not everyone was serious in dancing to achieve the intended result.
Not everyone dancing Zumba is looking for the same results; some people are having fun, others just want to have a good time, while some are fighting for their life as they have been told that they must lose weight or they will die soon. Some are there because they want to fit in a wedding dress, some are there because they want to impress their significant other, while some just want to be healthy. Some just come because they want to, but they have no goals to meet.
Group exercises’ are very different from personal coaching because in the group exercises no one really cares what you do; they expect you to know why you have paid to come to the gym. While the name ‘Group Exercise’ should be motivating? you are exercising with a groups of like-minded people? not everyone in the group exercises to get the desired results. In a group it’s not common even for the coach to ask you why you are not doing what they are telling you to do. They concentrate on those who are serious. Some people in the group are result-oriented; they know what they want to accomplish. They have a dress size they want to fit in or they have a body size they are targeting. Therefore, in every move they picture who they want to become and they get motivated. On the other hand, some just watch as others get what they want out of the same exercise that they cannot be committed to.
This is so true in our Christian walk too. It’s easy to hide in a certain group in the church. Maybe you are a member of the choir, an usher, a member of the leadership team, a part of the worship team, part of intercessors, or you volunteer in the Children Ministry. However, do you have the end result in mind? Are you running to get a prize when Jesus comes? Are watching Jesus and living according to the instructions he daily gives you? Are you just part of the body of Christ or are you alert and watchful? How about in real life, do you have goals, do you take your being here on earth, in this hour and season seriously? Do you live this life with intensity and a seriousness that touches the lives of others?
How much time and priority you give to any particular thing in your life determines your harvest. If you serve the Lord by spending time reading his word, researching his word and in prayer, you get victory quicker or faster in your battles. However, the person who waits for the battles to start to plan what to do will take longer to see the results. You can get ahead of the devil by paying attention to what the word of God says and doing it. Do it with an intensity that announces to the devil that you are serious and committed to the Lord. Your passion should be doing all things for the sake of the gospel that you might share its blessings. Let us not just be part of the group but run to win the prize of glory and let us run being heaven-minded. The writer of Hebrews says, “ Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” ( Hebrews 12:1).

“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive
to their cry; the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut
off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the
Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is
close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A
righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from
them all; he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.”
In all things we give Thanks —-
