George Onyango, age 43, the Kenyan man who was viciously beaten by two Yucaipa group home boys died at Loma Linda Hospital, California, on August 29,2009 from head injuries sustained during the August 22, 2009 attack. He died in the presence of those he loved including his family, friends and pastors. The two boys have been charged with murder in Superior Court of San Bernardino. Carlos Dubose, 17, of Oakland, and Davion Whitmore, a 16-year-old Long Beach gang member, have been charged with attempted murder, carjacking, second-degree robbery and evading an officer with willful disregard and have since entered a not guilty plea.
According to a press statement released by the family spokesman, Dr Godfred Masinde, George was a single father of two boys, Abraham Onyango, 14 and David Onyango, 11. Following the demise of their father, the two boys have now been left as orphans. The boys’ mother, Beatrice Onyango passed away in 2006 shortly after the family arrived in the USA. With the children having lost both parents, the community now bears a huge responsibility of making sure that the boys are taken care of and helping them grow up into the men George and Beatrice would have liked them to be. The journey for the boys is long and they will need all the support they can get from family, friends as well wishers in the entire Kenyan community.
At the time of his death, George was a graduate student at a law school, and was due to graduate in three months’ time with Master degree in Law. He was an active member of Kenya American Association (KAA) and Kingdom Interdenominational Community Church, (KICC) in San Bernardino. He served in several committees in the church.
George died working to help children. He loved and cared for them and this is what consequently led him to the Yucaipa group home where he worked part-time as a care provider and where he was attacked and critically injured.
Kenyans and well wishers are currently making arrangements for his funeral and a funeral account has been opened at:
